In first centuries when spices discovered, spices were a luxury and only rich people and kings allowed to buy. Spices plantations appeared first in Asia and Africa. Chinese people used herbs for medicine and for religious rituals.
The ancient Egyptians used spices to flavor food, as cosmetics and embalm the dead. For many centuries, Arab world owned trade with spices until the first caravans from Europe started to buy spices. Venice was first European state that started trading spices from Asia and Africa. For centuries, Roman Empire controlled trade with spices. Spain and Portugal wants to buy spices but that was too expensive. Spain sent people to explorer and find out new lands and new spices. When Christopher Columbus discovered the new lands of America, he also discovered new spices species. Captain Vasco da Gamma from Portugal discovered new routes to Asia, where can find spices. Vasco da Gamma's ships were able to bring first spices from Asia.
Portugal was first European Country, after Venice, which open sea routes to Asia and Africa for spices. After America discovered new spices appeared like chocolate, vanilla and chili pepper. People from Europe started to bring these new spices and opened a new spices market from the world. Because Asian market was very expensive concerning spices, European market became one of the cheapest markets with spices. From 18th century, Americans have entered in the market of spices with new spices discovered and became one of the biggest markets from the world. Chinese people are using over 300 herbs for medicine and food. From old discovered spices from Asia and Africa, came pepper, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and cumin. From new discovered spices from new lands of America, came sweet potato, vanilla, chocolate, papaya, tomato, pineapple, paprika, peanut, arrowroot, marigold, cardinal flower and bell pepper. Because of these spices discovered during the centuries everyone can find now on the markets spices from all world with small prices.
